What is the difference between shopping cart rules and catalog rules

This article is outdated starting from  MageRewards v1.12.0!

Catalog rules calculate earning/spending points on the product price and product attributes only before they hit the shopping cart.

Example A: Catalog Distribution Rule => 1pt earned per $1 spentItem #1: $59.99 = 59 points.

Item #2: $49.99 = 49 points.
TOTAL POINTS: 59 + 49 = 108 points.

Shopping cart rules calculate earning/spending points on the product price and product attributes only AFTER they hit the shopping cart. These are based on the shopping cart total or the shopping cart after the total has been calculated.

Example B: Shopping Cart Distribution Rule => 1pt earned per $1 spentItem #1: $59.99

Item #2: $49.99
TOTAL: 49.99 + 59.99 = $109.98
TOTAL POINTS: 109 points.

If you create a shopping cart points rule however the points earned per products don't show on the frontend because the earning total is actually not calculated on a per-product basis; Shopping cart rules can apply to shipping though, where catalog rules cannot because the value of shipping is not yet defined in the catalog.
